A search for my name returns more than one person. This page is about me, the one who writes here, and it sets out what I have done and how any of it can be checked.

Who I am

I am Michael Karl McNeil, a former Fire Battalion Chief. I began in the fire service in 1989 and spent twenty-five years in it, most of that time in fire prevention, finishing in the rank of Battalion Chief. From there I moved into environmental health and safety and industrial hygiene, and I have worked in that field ever since – hazardous materials, exposure monitoring, emergency planning, and the regulatory side of keeping people safe at work. I have been in independent practice since 2005.

What I hold

Four professional registrations: Registered Environmental Professional (REP), Registered Industrial Hygiene Professional (RIH), Emergency Planning Professional (EPP), and Qualified SWPPP Developer (QSD). Alongside those, hazardous materials management and incident command qualifications, and California EMT-II with tactical medic training. The conferral dates and the registration numbers are published in full on the credentials page, together with the course record behind them.

How to check it

I would rather you verified this than took my word for it. The recognition and references page lists what can be confirmed independently, carries reference letters by initial, and includes a background screening report from a consumer reporting agency, published in full with only the identifiers redacted. The spellings of my name

I appear in records as Michael Karl McNeil, Michael K. McNeil, Michael McNeil and Mike McNeil. All four are me. Certificates and rosters issued over thirty-five years also carry the occasional clerical misspelling – Mcneil with a lower-case n, Micahel, Micheal. Those are typing errors made by the issuing bodies, not other people, and I have left them as issued rather than asking for reprints.

Other people who share the name

McNeil is a common surname and the combination is not unique to me. Search results for it mix several different people, including at least one who has died. Nothing on this site refers to anyone but me, and I have no connection to matters involving anyone else who happens to share the name.
